Chapter 7

The first thing I notice when I come to is the feeling of being jostled while being carried. I barely open my eyes, to try and take in my surroundings, but even that small act costs me. My whole face feels like it’s on fire.

“I should kill you.” A deep voice growls over my head. I become aware of several things at once, my whole body is aching, I’m pressed up against a warm chest, being cradled in strong arms as he carries me, and that warm chest belongs to Gage. His scent hits me, and I want to cry. Cry because I know that my being knocked out means that the scared woman I tried to protect is being tortured and raped somewhere on this very premises, and because once again, I feel safe in a killer’s arms.

“Gage, come on mate. What did you expect me to do?” Noah’s tone suggests that he is pleading with Gage.

I shut my eyes at the feeling of Gage’s body tensing. “I expected you to damn well protect her, Noah. Damn it!” Gage growls.

“I’m sorry. She caught me off guard and slipped away from me. He got to her before I could orient myself, mate.” Noah says. I can hear the regret in his voice and for a second, I want to feel bad for him, but then I remember that terrified woman, and I’m filled with anger once again.

“I told you to keep her safe. Look at her, Noah! Does she look safe to you?!” He deep voice only gets deeper when he says this. He sounds even more menacing when his voice goes deeper. It causes me to shiver. I feel Gage squeeze me closer to his chest in response to my shiver. An odd action for someone who said I was just a play thing.

“Gage. I don’t know what you’ve been teaching her, but she is a force to be reckoned with when she is angry.” Noah says. He sounds completely exasperated. Whether it’s with Gage, or with me kneeing him in the groin and breaking his nose, I don’t know.

“Yes, she is.” I can hear the smile in Gage’s voice when he says this. Against my wishes, my body warms at the pride I hear in Gage’s voice. I hear the keypad and know that we have arrived at my room. Gage lays me on the bed gently as he tells Noah, “Go get, Tara. Tell her to bring the kit.” When the door closes, I open my eyes. I can hear the bathroom faucet running and try to sit up. Before I can get all the way up to a sitting position, Gage appears in the doorway. He stops when he sees me awake. The look on his face, catches me off guard. His face is filled with concern and regret. I know without a doubt it’s for me. Is this some sort of added torture? To make me have feelings for him, just to crush me, and then continue to ever confuse me? I wouldn’t put it past them to play continued head games.
